The Art of Khatam

Where geometry meets craftsmanship

Khatam is a traditional inlay art in which very small pieces are brought together in precise geometric arrangements.

From a distance the pattern appears as a single whole; up close, it reveals a fine order made up of stars, triangles, polygons and other geometric shapes. The way the small pieces come together in a repeating system gives khatam work its distinctive look.

The khatam tradition developed particularly in Iran and, over time, was applied to many different surfaces, from boxes to furniture and from musical instruments to a variety of decorative objects. Backgammon boards are among the special pieces to which this fine inlay work is applied.

Materials used

In khatam work, different materials are used together to create the colour and texture of the geometric pattern.

  • Bone: Creates contrast within the pattern with its light, cream tones.
  • Brass: Gives the surface a distinctive glow with its warm, metallic look.
  • Different woods: Provide brown, dark and natural wood tones.

The choice of materials and colour combinations may vary depending on the pattern and the model. These differences help give each khatam board its own unique look.

How is khatam made?

At the heart of khatam work lies the assembly of small pieces into a large geometric order.

  1. Preparing the rods: Different materials are made into thin pieces with specific geometric cross-sections.
  2. Forming the bundles: These pieces are placed side by side in a set arrangement and glued together. The result is bundles whose cross-sections reveal stars, flowers or other geometric shapes.
  3. Slicing: The bundles are cut into very thin slices. Each slice forms a small part of the larger pattern.
  4. Inlaying and veneering: The thin pieces are placed one by one on the surface and suitable parts of the board, following the chosen pattern.
  5. Surface finishing: In the final stage, the surface is levelled and polished, and suitable finishes are applied to help protect the pattern.

Production time can vary depending on the complexity of the pattern, the size of the board and the intensity of the craftsmanship. That is why some khatam models are available ready-made, while some special models may be made to order.

Beyond geometric patterns

The character of a khatam backgammon board is shaped not only by the materials used but also by the pattern itself.

The order created by repeating small geometric pieces continues across the whole board, forming a unified surface. By combining different colours and materials, very different looks can be achieved using the same basic technique.

In some special models, khatam work may be combined with illumination (tezhip) and other decorative techniques. In this way, more detailed traditional decorative elements accompany the geometric inlay patterns.

Using your khatam backgammon board

Although khatam backgammon boards have a strong decorative side, their main purpose is to be used as a playing board. Following a few simple care rules is enough to keep them looking beautiful for a long time.

  • Do not leave it in direct sunlight for long periods. Wood and other natural materials can be affected by light and heat over time.
  • Keep it away from strong heat and humidity. Do not store it next to direct heat sources such as radiators or fireplaces, or in very humid environments.
  • Use a soft cloth. For everyday cleaning, a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is enough. Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals.

Every khatam has its own character

The way a great number of small pieces come together in a set order is one of the most striking features of khatam work.

The precision of the pattern, the natural variations in the materials and the small details on the surface can give each product its own unique look. That is why it is natural for there to be small differences between two examples of the same design.

For us, the value of a khatam backgammon board lies not only in the finished pattern, but in the patience, precision and craftsmanship that make that pattern possible.
